President Obama versus Ron Paul versus Mitt Romney versus Sarah Palin
Considering the fact that the 2012 election for the Presidency is approximately just over a year from now, itÕs time to go through the ever-changing field of likely Conservative Candidates who might attempt to unseat President Obama.
Mitt Romney looks to be a favorite to run in the 2012 election . A former popular Massachusetts governor and 08 Presidential hopeful, Mitt Romney now age 63 is youthful, intelligent, and brings a remarkable history to bear. On the downside, his Mormon faith and the Massachusetts healthcare law (which is much like President Obama’s maligned health reform plan) might turn off enough voters away from Romney and to President ObamaÕs side.
Sarah Palin burst on the political landscape back in 08 when she came on as a VP candidate to running mate John McCailn, and while she did a great job in firing up the Republican faithful, she was also guilty of making a whole number of famously mocked errors in judgement. Unfortunately, these mistakes overshadowed whatever merits she brought to the table, and much like Dan Quayle 20 years earlier, Sarah Palin found herself branded, perhaps unfairly, for being stupid and not at all of a Presidential caliber. The fact that she quit her Alaska GovernorÕs job halfway through her term also doesnÕt say much to voters about her dedication to holding and performing the duties of a higher office. Taking all of this into consideration, plus her clear fame-mongering, it seems less and less likely that sheÕll actually make a 2012 election bid.
Mike Huckabee is another popular candidate from the right for the upcoming 2012 election. The former governor of Arkansas and another 2008 candidate that didn’t receive the nomination, Huckabee was the GOP frontrunner for a long time over the course of the 2008 campaign, even without the same deep pockets that benefitted other candidates. Currently the host of his very own show on FOX News, Huckabee remains loved by the GOP base and has also demonstrated his power to run an efficient campaign. Successful fundraising would be the key to get a Huckabee Presidential run.
Newt Gingrich is a huge GOP mainstay for over the past 20 years, perhaps most notably during his time as Speaker of The House. Seen as a brilliant and intellectual man, Gingrich’s personal life has certainly been somewhat marred by a few extra-marital affairs and divorces along with his polarizing status among the general populace. That said, Newt Gingrich is a fantastic party organizer and while he’s never run for President, his candidacy is looking more and more likely and viable.
Ron Paul, now 75, would wind up being oldest of all of the likely 2012 election candidates, but heÕs got experience that many of the others donÕt since heÕs run for president before, once as a Libertarian in 1988 and next as a Republican in 2008. Unfortunately, a number of Ron Paul’s views are looked upon as being too conservative, even for conservatives. WhatÕs more, many of his supporters can be so rabid that they are more of a liability than an asset.
It’s still too early to tell who will emerge and become the Republican choice for the 2012 election. Still, it should turn out to be an appealing election cycle for sure.
