Dog Food – Wet vs Dry – Pros/Cons?
Is dry dog food overall better for your dog.. or is it just better for their teeth?
I have an 18 month old pomeranian. I free feed him dry(Hills Science), but he doesn’t eat much. The only way I can get him to eat the dry stuff is if I wet it with a little hot water to soften and get a little gravy.
So the question is… if I’m wetting the dry, does it defeat the purpose of feeding him dry in the first place and I just should switch to feeding him a good quality organic wet food(he has had and likes the Paul Newman and Pets Promise brands).
Dry dog food itself is not sufficient for dental cleaning. So it being “better” is a moot point. Good dental health is achieved be regularly offering proper chews and regular cleaning (dogs need their teeth brushed too!) Pour a bowl of cheerios – eat it dry. Then poor some milk on those guys. After which meal do you walk away from with nice shiny teeth?
All dry food is is dehydrated for convienience. It’s easier to store, easier to feed, doesn’t spoil readily, and is cheaper.
The nice thing about wet food is – your dog will consume more water. Just like with people, drinking enough water is something many dogs just don’t do.
The hills diets aren’t very high quality. I think your dog would be better off switched to an organic wet food (or even dry)
